The closest professional sports teams play in St. Louis; the MLB team is the St. Louis Cardinals, the St. Louis Rams are in the NFL, and the St. Louis Blues are the NHL team. There is also a professional tennis team, the St. Louis Aces. The Missouri State University Bears play in Springfield, about an hour and a half southwest of the base.

Columbia, about half an hour north of Jefferson City and 2 hours north of base, is home of the NRA Bianchi Cup, a noted difficult shooting competition with several divisions.

The Show Me State Games are an Olympic-style amatuer sport event held in Columbia and drawing Missourians from around the state. There are many events, including archery, martial arts, racing, shooting, and even ultimate frisbee.

Hunting in Missouri is under the Missouri Department of Conservation; they hold seasons for deer and turkey, small game including badger, bobcat, coyote, red and gray fox, rabbit, raccoon, striped skunk, and fowl including dove, geese, pheasant, quail, rail, and woodcock. They also oversee fishing in Missouri. Local river and lake fishing includes bass, catfish, paddlefish, trout, and walleye. Plenty of fishing is open year round, but see the DoC website for specific rules. Phelps County, where Rolla is located, just east of Fort Leonard Wood, is said to have more trout streams than any other county in the United States.
